On Monday 10th October, our Patron of Reading, Steve Cole, returned for an action-packed afternoon with Fryer. After announcing the victors of the alien themed Year 7 Summer Reading Challenge, Steve shared his insider knowledge of life in space, gathered for his latest book series Swarm Rising, co-written with real life astronaut Tim Peake. Steve amused the audience with alien anecdotes and space sayings such as ‘Today’s wee, tomorrow’s tea’, accounting for the 80% of water recycled on the International Space Station.
Librarian, Grace Ritchie, commented “To celebrate the release of Steve Cole’s latest novel with Tim Peake, Swarm Enemy, we tasked Year 7 over the summer to design their own alien species and write a corresponding news report detailing their invasion of Earth. The standard was so high this year we had trouble even picking a shortlist to send to Steve for judging!”
In first place for her “super-cute” knitted Bean, was Nuala, alongside Max “for his satirical and imaginative newspaper piece and well-thought-out aliens.” Steve commented “I love how he had made arguments for and against them.”
Steve continued, “The runners up were Elissa for her Plups, a well-thought out alien race, and Nathaniel who made me laugh with the Gordon Ramsay vomit moment… I wish I could list runner-up runners-up too; the standard was so high! Really impressed with this lot.”
