Biology in the Kitchen

Our Upper Sixth A Level Biologists are currently studying biotechnology; a branch of applied science that uses living organisms and their derivatives to develop products.

This week, the group swapped the lab for the kitchen to discuss food production, before making their own ginger beer and kimchi.

Gemma Sims, Head of Biology, explained “We are studying cloning and biotechnology for A Level Biology. Core practicals include dilution plating of bacteria and studying the pH change in yoghurt production but in addition to this we have carried out micropropagation (cloning) of cauliflower and will be immobilising lactase enzymes to make lactose free milk.”

“We also took a stroll to the Food Technology room to show how biotechnology is used in food production. Ginger beer and kimchi were the results of our fermentation!” Following some days in the fridge, the group’s products were ready to take home and enjoy.
